Dog Year Calculator 2025: How Old is Your Dog in Human Years?
Have you ever wondered how old your furry friend really is in human years? The old "multiply by 7" rule is outdated. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has developed a more accurate method that takes into account your dog's breed size and the fact that dogs age faster in their early years.
The New Dog Year Formula
The AVMA's formula is more complex than the simple "multiply by 7" rule. Here's how it works:
For the first year of a dog's life:
- Small dogs (under 20 lbs): 15 human years
- Medium dogs (21-50 lbs): 15 human years
- Large dogs (51-90 lbs): 15 human years
- Giant dogs (over 90 lbs): 12 human years
After the first year, each additional year is calculated differently based on breed size:
- Small dogs: Add 4 human years per dog year
- Medium dogs: Add 4.5 human years per dog year
- Large dogs: Add 5 human years per dog year
- Giant dogs: Add 6 human years per dog year
Why Breed Size Matters
Larger dogs tend to age faster than smaller dogs. This is why the formula takes into account your dog's breed size. A Great Dane will age differently than a Chihuahua, even if they were born on the same day.
